EL SEGUNDO EAGLES 2011 PRE-SEASON UPDATE

March 7, 2011

El Segundo Eagles 2011 pre-season update:

The El Segundo Eagles are pleased to inform you of some very positive developments and direction for our league. 2010 was a great season for our city, winning 2 PCC championships. But at ESYF we are always working to improve and grow. We want what is best for our kids. Besides some key personnel moves,we are looking to upgrade the helmets at the older divisions, to new high tech safety helmets over the next few years.

We take filling our coaching staffs very seriously. For the upcoming season we had 2 head coaching slots to fill and we worked very hard to come up with the right mix.

First, we are pleased to announce that Chris Parr has agreed to the opportunity to work with the younger players and bring them along. He has been promoted to be the new Head coach of the 2011 El Segundo Pee Wee Division and will be working with Guy Cerdajr and Joe Mendoza, as well as some other very well-qualified assistants. Chris brings great knowledge and passion to this role and we are very excited about this development. His 10 years of coaching youth football for the Eagles, along with his experience as a player at UCLA, make him a wonderful choice for this position. Last season Chris was co-head coach and Defensive Coordinator for the 2010 Jr. Midget Championship team that allowed zero points in the championship game.

The Pacific Coast Conference is also working very hard to constantly improve and grow in all areas. One of their priorities they are working on is to get the best coaches possible for all the kids and leagues. We are very excited to be a big part of a new direction to constantly train and upgrade all the coaching in the PCC. The Pacific Coast Conference has set up a newly formed “Coaches Alliance” working to upgrade and teach coaches throughout the whole PCC league. This is not an El Segundo commission, but one formed by the PCC. The committee will work to facilitate open communication among coaches across the league and help train and recruit new coaches to the PCC. All coaches will have to attend at least one mandatory meeting beyond the head coaches. We are so excited that 2 of the 7 coaches asked are from our league; Bob McDaniel and Tim O’Keefe from El Segundo have been commissioned by the PCC to be on this seven-coach committee.

At the same time we were able to take the opportunity to enlist Bob McDaniel to be the head coach of the Midget team for 2011. Bob’s constant study, his 5 years coaching for the Eagles, his Div III College National Title as a player, make him a great choice to be the head coach. We know he will help prepare our boys for high school ball and beyond and of course to have a wonderful 2011 season at El Segundo. Last season Bob was in charge of the PCC’s top-rated, highest-scoring offense for our 2010 Jr. Midget Championship team. The Midget team is also fortunate to have a great complement of returning coaches from the Championship team including Alby Silvera and Jake Meier (who had 3 championships as Head coach while in Torrance) with more qualified people being interviewed and on the way.

Thank you all and we are looking towards a great 2011 season.

Cheers to You – Please Join us for an Evening of Cheer

Athletic Coaches Have a Profound Impact on the Lives of Young Athletes

Survey of thousands of US travel coaches reports that nearly all are asked for non-sports related advice by their players
April 20, 2010 Goldens Bridge, NY—Athletic coaches have a tremendous impact on the lives of their young athletes, according to a poll taken by the National Coach Survey (NCS).   In a survey taken by more than 1,000 travel sports coaches in the first two weeks of April, coaches responded that more than 80% have been asked by parents to speak to their children about non-sport issues.  Nearly 90% say that their players seek advice about non-sports issues, such as problems with friends, schoolwork or family issues.
In a typical in season week, a third of the coaches polled said that they spend more than 16 hours with their athletes.  Nearly all of the coaches said reported they council their players on nutrition or off-season training, apart from games and practices.  When asked what the most important lesson they wanted to teach their athletes, 40% replied “hard work,” 30% replied integrity, 20% teamwork and 10% said sportsmanship.  Winning was not mentioned
“You can see from these numbers just how important coaches can be to the development and choices that young athletes make, especially at the travel sports level,” said John Kelly, Publisher of NationalCoachSurvey.org. “Our research shows that coaches often rank equal to, and in some cases higher than, parents in terms of influencing the decisions young people make on and off the field. I don’t think the general public has any idea about the level of their influence.”
The National Coach Survey focuses on exploring the issues facing our nation’s athletic coaches and the impact they have on our society.  Twice a month, NCS distributes a new survey on topics that relate directly to how coaches impact and improve the lives of the young athletes they work with so closely.   Full results of this survey can be found at www.NationalCoachSurvey.org
The National Coach Survey is managed by My Sports Dreams, a leading provider of product-less solutions to financial challenges faced by teams at the collegiate, interscholastic and travel levels nationwide.  For more information, visit www.mysportsdreams.com.

Reseda park to be renamed in honor of slain SWAT Officer Randal Simmons

January 28, 2010 |  9:54 am

A Reseda park will be renamed today in honor of the first Los Angeles police SWAT officer to die in the line of duty.

At an 11 a.m. ceremony, Councilman Dennis Zine, a former L.A. police officer, will officially re-christen West Valley Park at Vanowen Street and Wilbur Avenue as Randal D. Simmons Park.

A member of the Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team, Simmons was fatally shot in the neck in February 2008 in Winnetka while trying to persuade a 20-year-old gunman who had killed his father and two brothers to surrender.

The 20-year SWAT veteran was 51. The devout Christian was described as “the rock” of the elite tactical team, the first of its kind in the United States.

Simmons was the first officer killed in the pioneering unit’s four decades. About 10,000 people, most of them law enforcement officers, attended Simmons’ funeral.

“Everybody is going to be pleased because it continues his legacy of community service and community advocacy,” said Jane Kolb, a spokeswoman for the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks.
